Best little Hooligan out there!

By David C. Gulliver(Owner), Jul. 12, 2014

Well, when my wife made it clear that she would not ride on the back on the '07 FJR1300A- it was time to sell it, because it too perfect of bike to allow to languish in a shed for even one season, which is what was gonna happen if I didn't sell it!

What started the evaluation process was 2014 Duc... ati Panigale 899, even my non- rider wife thinks it looks like sex on wheels! After a test ride, I was out- the bike was excellent, but, I can't ride for 10 minutes at a time!

There were several bikes that I was interested in, and, I rode the Triumph Speed Triple R- which I liked, but, found its powerband to be so large & broad- I could live in 1st & 2nd gear for the entire time I owned it & still never get close to using all of the bike- even with those limitations.

After liking it so much, and, understanding it's little brother- the Street Triple 675 R ABS, at 1/3rd less than the Panigale I was willing to write a check for, I rode a few other bikes (Yamaha FZ-09, GSX-R750...) all over the place, but- I wanted to have fun & be an important part of the overall performance- my skills would be a determining factor as too how well it does: on the street, at a stoplight, on the track, in the twisties.

Lots of reading, lots of YouTube videos later- I was confident that this was "The Bike", the test ride confirmed it, as I drove circles around the salesman.

Think: 400 Lbs, 106HP/50 Ft. Lbs. Torque, silky smooth clutch, best brakes available- this is a superbike by anyone's measurements. It literally performs as well as the very best bikes on the planet: 0-60MPH, 100-0MPH, it's track competitive, it a trick rider's dream bike, is engineered to a fare-thee-well, and, is somewhat bulletproof based on the 50,000 sold worldwide since 2007. It competes "above it's weigh class" in motorcycle magazine comparisons, and, invariably wins. I'm sure, someone can find a comparison where it lost- but, I haven't found it yet?

Need to adjust your line in a corner? Go ahead, there's room for that. Catch air by mistake in a passing maneuver on the street? It's OK, the bike lands as smoothly as a jumbo jet. It feels hard-wired into your brain, as when you think a thought- it's done, before you can plan exactly how your gonna do it. Wanna wheelie, but not sure how? 3 tries, and, you're a pro.

All of this, in conjunction with: 50+ MPG regardless of how insanely you're driving. Worried that you're being hard on your baby- not a problem, they're very robust.

Want defeatable ABS- standard. An alarm-available. TPMS to make sure that a tire isn't going down during the next tight corner?-available. Quickshifter- available. Adjustable rearsets? Available. And so on...All OEM, all supported by Triumph under warranty. All for $10,000.00. Really.

I'm probably gonna need plastic surgery, just to remove the stupid grin from my face. I'm old, and, I ride "nice". I use all of the safety rules, and, I signal my intentions well in advance. I wear all the gear- all the time. I have children, own a home, pay taxes and, occasionally let people in in heavy traffic. Nice. But, don't hand me the keys to this bike, 'cause Mr. Nice Guy disappears, and, a Hooligan replaces him. Yes, the bike's name is O'Hooligan, and, yes, he used to beat me up & steal my lunch money. Now, we're best friends and people go out of their way to stay away from me.

That's what a 2014 Triumph Street Triple 675R ABS does to me. If you are in the market for a bike to everything except go across country- do yourself a favor, and, ride this thing. I didn't think I could become a thug, a hooligan, a ne'er do well- but, there you go.
